I went for a ride this morning but maybe should have stayed at home. It was very wet out although not really raining. I was tired before setting out. I took the descent from the Epping Road down to Waltham Abbey. I was letting the bike run on a bit but on one of the bends I suddenly hit a patch of gravel washed into the road by recent rainfall. I very nearly lost it and stayed upright more by luck than bike handling skills. Half a mile further on I was sharply left hooked on a mini roundabout. I was grateful for my disc brakes which really stopped me quickly. I wanted to go to High Beech via Avey Lane. I got up Avey Lane, eventually! I was reduced to my granny gear for some of it. A slice of bread pudding and a hot cuppa at High Beech revived me a bit. Heading back towards Harlow I accidentally allowed the bike to drift left over the road edge white line. When I came back over the line my rear wheel slipped, my front wheel jerked round a bit and almost threw me off. Again by luck I remained upright. I can only assume the wet conditions made the white line extra slippery. From there I got home with no further bad events. Next time I am very tired I am staying indoors. I have used up my allowance of good luck for a while.

All you need to complete the set is some wet leaves.

I think you should go back out and look for some.

Don't ever fret about using your granny gear- that's what it's for, I have a few Strava KOM and top 10's thanks to dropping to granny and spinning it out, higher cadence via grinding those knees. Chin up, we all get bad rides.

Avey lane almost killed me on the first attempt  Good job not giving up. If you really want a killer hill try lippitts, the right turn half way up mott st. My garmin registers it at 18%. Only decent hills in these parts. Gets crowded on a Sunday.

Low Hill Lane near Roydon is a good little leg stretcher. It isn't very long but feels almost vertical

Mott St is a good one to do, Just around the corner to Avey Lane, The bread pudding will taste better after you have done that one. That tea will taste soooo good.^_^
Bit steeper but in three stages, we use it as our training hill, let us know how you get on.
http://app.strava.com/activities/206445666/segments/4868009255 My best time

I actually did Mott Street this morning so pleased with myself!

I left Harlow, went down to High Beech via Epping and the Wakes Arms then down Avey Lane, Sewardstone Road, then up Mott Street then back to the tea stall for tea and bread pudding! Mott Street wasn't too bad and I didn't have to use my granny gear until the last little ramp up. Up to the Lippitts Hill turn off I was wondering what all the fuss was about, it was easy, then I went round a right hand bend and up went the road. I stayed in my middle ring and 32 on the back all the way up to the final little climb when I had to drop into my front granny ring. Next challenge must be Lippetts Hill.

My Granddaughter is expecting her first baby within the next couple of weeks so will that mean I can have a "great granny gear?"

I rode a 26 miler this morning and am pleased to say I found it easy. I wasn't sure if I would get out because of the fog but it started to clear up quite quickly.

I found a very nice place to sit and have coffee. Autumn is really beginning to settle in.

Lippetts you will find easy enough, they are just a nice group of hills you can do circuits on, nice pub on Lippetts hill. The Owl. do a nice snack in there.
