Being an Alan never really mattered to me one way or another, until the arrival of Alan Partridge, since when it's become kind of a default name for 'loser'. Fortunately my parents had the foresight to give me a second name as a fall back. Unfortunately they chose 'Geoffrey'.

Slightly off topic but a friend of mine who is a teacher had Michael Rogers and David Ruffley after one another in her form register a few years ago.
She amused herself for 5 years reading the register out in full every morning.
The kids never got it!

Ian don't get me wrong I love the name, but a year or two ago I hadn't heard the name for twenty or thirty years. I called my son George fifteen years ago when it was an old name not in common use , now it's as usual to hear a George as a Jack or Harry. My point was that proper solid adult names can be be a bit surprising on a newborn.

Paul
Paul,

I see where you're coming from. These names are now out of fashion- Trevor, Brian.
Who would give those names to a baby now.....?

Here comes the flames.....

My little one, Henry (already slated above), one of his middle names is Brian. Don't really like it but it was the name of one of his grandpa's.

First Henry gets slagged off, then Brian.... He must have a third name. Here goes for the hat trick- any parent to give the third Christian name "nutcluster" to a boy should be locked up.

Did I win a prize?

Mine are Samuel and Maggie,

Samuel has 3 middle names, two are the names of his Grandfathers the third is Ohana. I had wanted to name him after my Uncle and Godfather but it would have been cruel as he was called Percy and his surname also began with P. So I went with Ohana as to quote Lilo "Ohana means family. Family means nobody gets left behind — or forgotten."

For the first 2 days of Samuel's life he was know as "Merry Sunshine" as apparently in my drug addled state after giving birth that was what I insisted the Nurses wrote on his tag.

We had pondered long and hard over Maggie's name and could not decide on anything, prior to her being born Maggie was not on our list, but when she came out red haired with a temper to match shouting in indignation she looked like a Maggie (not a Margaret) but a Maggie. My Mum is Margaret but she was not named for her, her middle name is for my Mother... Maggie's middle name is Maude.

When I was born my middle name was to be Maude for my Great Grandmother that my Mother was very close to, Mum had a hard time having me partly her own fault - she wanted me born on Valentines day, and so would not allow them to perform a c-section when she was having problems, on the evening of the 13th her heart stopped and my heart faltered they brought her back and told her sign or you both die, she signed we both lived, but she lost a huge amount of blood and had other complications so was kept in hospital for a long while, she sent my Father to register my birth, he celebrated a little too much before going there and could not remember what middle name I was supposed to have but could remember my Mums middle name of Anne and so I ended up with that instead of Maude...
