I drove to work, and was being tailgated by a man driving a silver BMW. I saw a cyclist in front that I recognised as a colleague so (as there was oncoming traffic) I slowed to time my pass with no oncoming vehicles. This pissed off matey-boy in BMW who seemed intent on getting as close as he could to me...???? I indicated and pulled out to pass my colleague. BMW (self-gratification artist) gave him ZERO room whatsoever and made ZERO movement to pass the cyclist.

A bit further BMW (self-gratification artist passed me and accelerated at speed to go and sit on the boot lid of the car in front of me (that was doing 50-55).

I caught BMW (self-gratification artist) up and I suppose out of spite I drove as close to him as he did to me, and did what he was doing (looking to overtake by crossing white lines etc) This seemed to stop BMW self-gratification artist from tailgating the car in front and slowed him down. He was looking in his mirror wondering why I was so close and trying to pass his (superior) car.....

So, it's ok to tailgate people and pass cyclists close if you drive a silver BMW, but you shouldn't tailgate a silver BMW that tailgates other vehicles?

Mate at work said thanks for the nice pass, but straight away said he was scared by the silver BMW that was behind me.......

Like I said last night top gear has a large audience god knows why. It's not my cup of tea these days, watching men past middle age arsing about like teenagers in expensive cars isn't what I call "entertainment". Cycling rarely hits the mainstream and when it does like in top gear I would like to think the BBC would push for it to be at least a little informative. I do wonder sometimes why we are still forced to fund the BBC.
What is up with middle aged men arsing about, growing old is compulsory, growing up is not.

So you admit to tailgating, not clever at all. I take it you may not own a BMW.

I watched it this afternoon and either Boardman and co played their part well or they were duped and should of realised what was happening when Clarkson and May turned up. I felt the whole piece was just a set up for the top gear program and added nothing to the cyclist/motorist debate. Clarkson going about how much room he was being given on the road, well, with a motorbike and camera man just infront of them, even the silliest of motorist is going to give them room.
Nah, Boardman and co were completely in on it as the message was in there. They would have refused to take part otherwise. I particularly liked the "why not go and try if for yourself?" line that got in there

I quite enjoyed it on the whole, the Lance Armstrong poster was particularly good

Boardman and the other two officials are no fools. They knew exactly what they were doing and would have seen the script well in advance before agreeing to appear on the show.
I'm sure they would have seen both the funny side of things and the more subtle underlying message.

Watched it in Iplayer to see what all the fuss was about.
As per usual with these things, it was far too long and dragged the joke out too far.
Not for me.

I loved their deadpan reactions... almost like watching one of Christopher Guest's films

Humour-wise, it was like watching Bob Hope, but I think it has probably done an awful lot of good. Taking the piss out of cyclists on a petrolhead programme, while showing how vulnerable they are, probably gets the message out pretty well to a target audience. Certainly better than the usual arm-waving miserable stuff from cycling activists, alas.

Accidentally caught it while channel surfing. Unfunny bilge. Still, would like to see James May's video on bike maintenance as he, along with Hammond, are the only ones to appreciate cycling. Clarkson is an idiot as per usual, and BTW, isn't he looking old and 'jowly'?.

It's a bit more complicated than that...

THat's ...errr... two out of three then.

Both May and Hammond have ridden bikes on the show before. Hammond won the cross-London commuter challenge on a bike, while May carted his Brompton to Italy on the train to try and steal a march over the other two. He then got lost, but he and Hammond still arrived before Clarkson in the car.
