Felt like a repeat of the stage Pidcock failed to win last?? year. Everyone expects him to close the gaps in those situations, he could have done with keeping a team mate with him. Huge leap up the GC though but I can't see him holding on to the ones now behind him in the mountains. Gap closed to around 7:30 in the end so probably 4th.

Get's 4th. That gives me 2,3 and 4 on GC for my Velogames

Pretty sure Ayuso/Skjelmose/ Lipowitz/Del Toro will have hat off him before too long though

I can see him passing MvdP though.

I think he'll lose a good chunk of what he took today on tomorrow's stage unless he recovers incredibly well.

He’ll probably lose all he gained today, over the weekend, once Pog and Jonas do their thing.
The next two stages are proper GC days.

He put a lot of work in today (but so did some of the Trek boys - Skjelmose definitely), but I don't think he's completely outclassed in the mountains (except by Pog/Jonas who outclass all others). 3rd in the Vuelta last year wasn't a total fluke.

I don't think GC was his target coming into the race, so the question is also what does he want to do now he's got a decent GC position to fight for? He's not getting in the break again unless he sheds a chunk of time.

I’m not sure Jonas or Visma have anything left but maybe they’ve been keeping their powder dry.

Jorgenson has been ill, obv, and Affini might still be a bit sore from his nat champs crash, but Hagenes and Campenaerts looked fresh enough today when they got in the break (and waited on the summit) and Piganzoli has looked decent enough.

Not sure about keeping powder dry, we've only really had three proper GC stages, and one of them was a medium mountains breakaway type of stage anyway. It's massively backloaded this year, which is either a good thing because your magic third week legs are about to arrive just in time for all those long hard climbs, or a bad thing because you've just been battered for three and a half minutes in two and a half mountain stages and there are more to come and the Giro you had as an appetiser appears to have given you indegestion.

Obviously we're used to seeing Visma far more active on all sorts of terrain, but about 99% of that was probably just Wout doing Wout things, and right now he's out exploring gravel mountain tracks in Spain somewhere.
