Tour Von Deutschland

After last year's Ronde Van Nederland, I am now in the initial phase of planning a tour of Germany - a ride along the full length of the Rhine to be precise. I am looking to ride from Lake Constance to Rotterdam.

Getting there will consist of riding to the port in Kingston Upon Hull and then being ferried to Europoort.

After that I will ride to Rotterdam, then get a train to Nijmegen. From there it is a short ride over the border to Kleve where I will get on the train (DB) and travel south to Bavaria.

A slightly better option looks to be to get the train from Rotterdam to Venlo, then ride to Duesseldorf (camp overnight) and then connect for trains to Bavaria from there.

I could fly to Bavaria and return from Amsterdam, but the hassle of getting to the airport packing the bike/luggage/box and doing the same on the way back is not a holiday (to me). It also doesn't work out much cheaper! Getting to the airport (Stansted) is 400 miles return (fuel/parking)

I also would prefer to keep as green as possible by using sustainable transport, see a bit of the country, and be a little 'adventurous', so the ride/ferry/ride/train/ride/train/loooooooong ride/ferry/ride option is the one I am going for.

I've got the Esterbauer books for Bodensee and for the Rhine from Basel to Strasbourg or thereabouts if you'd like them?
I can confirm that the Bodensee is really quite nice, and offers the chance to cycle in three countries (Austria, Switzerland and Germany) in a not-especially rushed morning.
The Zeppelin museum in Freidrichshafen is well worth a look, as are the Rhine Falls.

The only thing I can say about the Bodensee (and I speak as one for whom it is effectively the local lake) is that you need to pick your time of year or at least day of the week. At the weekends you can't move for cycling groups of grannies and families. This can be very frustrating as there are long stretches where the path is narrow. That said, if the weather cooperates, it is a very pleasant ride.

It is likely to be a Sunday when I ride through the area and on towards Schaffhausen. Given the fully loaded nature of my bike/tour, I will more than likely be in their way.

Now researching tents. Looking at a Vango Omega 250, but if anyone knows of a similar priced/quality/size tent, feel free to pitch in (sic)

Also looking for a sleep mat/air bed. I have a roll up foam one that I have had for donkey's, but the blow up air bed I use at the mo is a pain to inflate after a day's ride. I might look at a self inflating one.

Sooner you than me pal. It was a sunny Sunday on the Bodensee when I went flying as a result of taking avoiding action due to an erratic granny.

Have you considered going up the Danube as far as Tuttlingen and then dropping down to the Bodensee via Stockach?

Andy, the plan is to get the ferry to Europoort, and the train to Venlo. a 30 mile ride and overnight in/near Duesseldorf. The next day use a Quer Duerch Land DB ticket to get to Oberstdorf. A day or so in Oberstdorf then set off to Lindau/Schaffhausen/Basel/Strasbourg etc etc.

Sounds like a good plan and I'm sure that you'll enjoy the Bodensee despite my misgivings.

Düsseldorf is a fine place for a night out. If you are looking for a hotel then the Hotel an der Kö is nicely located about 5 bike mins from the main station and about 1.5 km from the Altstadt with all its pubs and restaurants.
