I found if I was doing serious miles/time on the bike (well, more than say 50 at once) then with a flexible sole I got really bad hot spots from the pedals using SPDs. I'd definitely get a stiff sole, whatever, but with plenty of grip for walking in.
Also, I really like the boa fastening/tightening system. Mine have been really reliable, anyway, but you can't beat velcro and a ratchet strap for simplicity.
