Shoes need to be your own - but there is no issue with trainers + clips and straps. You will always be starting/stopping from the inside rail anyway, so plenty of things to hold onto so you can tighten your straps up before you move off.

Also, you really don't want to be wearing a borrowed helmet/gloves. It's a bit like wearing someone else's pants. I would strongly suggest bringing your own.
I'm happy to bring own helmet and gloves, just wasn't sure if you had to use certain types. Sounds like a fun experience.

Any helmet that complies with standards is fine - I would suggest full-finger gloves a) in case you fall off, and b) better for grabbing hold of the rail when you are starting/stopping.

... and there's some stuff here http://www.beewee.org.uk/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=138&Itemid=76 and at the sub-tabs about track riding that may be useful (and one of the pix has IanH OTP )

A bit off-topic but there's a velodrome in one of the old seaplane hangars at Calshot near Southampton - it's smaller than the standard track, making it a bit like riding round a pudding basin. The track used to be used at Wembley when they ran the Skol (a long-gone lager brand) 6 -day event back in the 1960s.
