Yes, looks like the Explorer group have been bought out by Hymer, Explorer Group were Elddis, Compass, Bucaneer & Crown, I have it on good authority that Siddle Cook who started Elddis Caravans was known to turn up on Elddis Owners Club Rallies, towing his Elddis behind a Rolls Royce, he also set up Elddis Transport, iirc both are on Delves Lane, Consett

I always wondered if they were linked!

A couple more images of our old Safari, when we lived in the last house, & kept it in a paddock behind the local mechanics garage

Plus, one, quite a few years ago, at a second-hand spares/breakers, at Humanby? (east coast of Yorkshire, near Bridlington)
The file name mentions 'Safari, Royale, Carlight'?

A couple more, from my files
I may have featured them before, or in the 'Large SUV' thread?

I'd parked on the edge of the rugby club fields behind where we used to live (there with permission)
I might have just collected it, at this point??

The 90 was a genuine factory V8 CSW, on an 'E' plate (SU carbs/134BHP)

Friday 18th

I had to go on a 'rescue mission' last night
Daughters boyfriend had arranged to go camping with friends, near Settle (North Yorkshire)
She stayed at home with the Dog

To avoid the Bradford ULEZ, he'd decided to go via; M62/M606.Wibsey/Queenbury/A629/Keighley

We got a call about 17:00(?), telling us that he'd broken down, & that the 110 wasn't playing anymore
So, as they have RAC membership, he rang
Times were quoted, & passed, as it was decided that he needed tilt-bed recovery, BUT, for whatever reason, they wouldn't collect the 'van?

I was despatched to go & get it, he'd told me where he was, & that he was opposite the Black Dyke Mills Practice Rooms, so I knew to within a dozen yards
On arrival, it was apparrant that his explanation of why it wasn't going anywhere was to be seen, as the drive belt can be seen under it
(
The strands were wrapped round the vacuum pump pulley
He was 'parked' at a crossroads, with a filter-lane alongside him (in opposite direction), & at a bus-stop

Once it was unhitched & pushed forward, I managed to get inbetween & hitch the 'van up to the Kodiaq
Home via the reverse of the above route
It was set down in the yard that they store it in
I was home for 20:45, & in bed by 21:05 (on early-turns, with an alarm ringing before 04:00)

On the bright side, it hadn't happened on the A65........... now that could have been an interesting 'recovery' for the RAC & myself!

I have no idea what time he was eventually recovered, as she's not left me a text, telling me

Edit; Saturday 19th @ 09:40
I’ve been told he eventually got taken home at 23:30

As far as I know, the Bradford ULEZ doesn't apply to cars (yet) just vans & lorries, unless that was originally a crew cab 110 that's had rear seats/windows fitted, if it is they're at risk of lower speed limits on commercial vehicles too on NSL roads

He’s had the fine, appealed
Been refused a cancellation

It must be registered as a commercial, as I've just had a look, https://www.bradford.gov.uk/breathe...-if-you-need-to-pay/check-if-you-need-to-pay/ and passenger cars & motorbikes are still exempt. he also needs to be aware of single carriageway NSL as these are restricted to 50 MPH & Dual carriageways are 60 MPH for commercials.

It's a 9seater station wagon

This is a damned expensive 'rig'!!
The Aussie 'van looks fine, but as for the tow-vehicle... no!

I've just added a post on a Land-Rover forum, that I've been a member of for a long time (since 2003)
That was back in the day, when I owned them myself, to enquire if anyone else has had this situation
Or, indeed, how to change the classification at DVLA level

I've done a bit of digging too, it seems that ALL Defenders were registered under the N1 Light commercial classification, from around 2002, regardless of whether it's a 110 or 90 Station Wagon, or the Hard Top or pick up versions, in order to benefit from cheaper VED, however this now ensures you pay through the nose for ULEZ areas, and could be picked up for speeding on NSL single/dual carriageways, and apparently as a further kick in the teeth if it carries more than 9 passengers plus driver, you need minibus entitlement, D1, and D1E if towing over 750KG! an utter minefield as this isn't on a licence if you passed the test on or after 1st Jan 1997
