Trains from London to Newbury

I need to travel, with bike on Saturday next from London to either Reading or Newbury. I note the comment on the NR website that cycle reservation is necessary. I don't recall this when i last travelled on GWR (a few years ago ) from Swindon and Reading into London.

My plans, as always are subject to last minute change, so I don't want to make reservations or buy advance tickets. Will I succeed or fail if i turn up without tickets or reservations?

That will depend on how many other cyclists with reservations there are, and the mood of the 'train manager' at the time.

Reservations will not be needed on the stopping (slow) train to Reading including the electric trains to Didcot.
