I think he enjoyed his domestique role at the Tour. He strikes me as the type that didn't enjoy the pressure of going for GC

I remember Kwiatokowski having a similar transformation from Top 10 GC guy to 2nd last man in the mountain train and has made a good career out of it

I think I saw that from a points perspective, you get more for winning stages than for coming 9th, so maybe we'll see more Carapaz-style riders who are certainly strong but unlikely to challenge the podium going toe to toe, so chase stages and if being let off the leash helps them sneak into the top 10 as well, it's a bonus. O'Conner is another who has pretty much gone down that route. It wasn't that long ago that he and Gall were seen as equal GC threats, but whereas Gall still aspires for that, O'Conner clearly doesn't.

A stage win in the Vuelta was worth 180 juicy UCI points, the same as finishing tenth on GC, but 7th on GC is worth 340 points - nearly two stage wins - and the top three GC places are 1100, 885 and 750.

Mas won 1100 GC points, plus 420 points for the stage win & finishes, plus 20 points for each day he wore the red jersey - another 260 points

Carapaz won 600 points for his 4th place GC, plus 185 points for stage finishes (best stage result was a 4th place for 80 points) - 785 pts

Meanwhile, Wouts green jersey was worth 180 points - same as a stage win - and he picked up 130 points for second in the KoM and 20 for 44th on GC and then 760 for two stage wins and finishes - 1090 pts

Brennan picked up 1100 points for five stage wins plus some finishes - the same as Mas for his GC win. He also got 130 for 2nd in the points comp

For the record, there are fines as well - the standard seems to be 25 points for littering, sticky bottles, peeing in public etc - which is the equivalent of finishing tenth on a stage


While we're are on subject of UCI points, we now have an answer to "Can a UCI WT team have a worse Grand Tour than Picnic did at the Tour de France?"

It was Picnic who supplied the answer, quelle suprise

In the Tour they scored 95 pts, in the Vuelta they couldn't even manage that - finishing with 77pts and just 3 riders
Good job they were all well behaved and didn't attract any fines really...

While we're are on subject of UCI points, we now have an answer to "Can a UCI WT team have a worse Grand Tour than Picnic did at the Tour de France?"

If I'd been paying attention, that question had already been answered - or should never have been asked! The Vuelta was actually their second best GT of the year

They scored 67 pts in the Giro, putting them at 239 points from this years three Grand Tours.


To put that in context, Jasper Stuyven had 240 points wrapped up with a seventh place in MSR all the way back in March
