I now own a Mountain bike for the first time in 17 or so years and I think I may need to get down with the lingo!

A guy I know is into his MTB'in in a big way, and he's a twat he talks like that, took me a few weeks to figure out a 'lid' was in fact a helmet.

Just call me Chris...
I have actually tried it in reverese too.

I tried saying "rad" and "sick" a lot in the hope that it would improve my skillz.......

Why did you buy it though?

No criticisism, purely curious. I assume you aren't a MTB'r?

No, I'm an occasional mtb'er, even done a few built trails, I occasionally buy a mag for a bit of inspiration and to see if there's any trails in that I can do. I don't normally buy this mag.

It's not dull, honestly

Scary, huge fun, awe inspiring, frustrating, painful, exhilerating, depressing, exciting, maybe, but not dull

Fair enough. I've done a couple of trails - that one up in the Lakes near Hawkshead springs to mind, whatever it's called - and while it was fun up to a point, it just struck me as sort of pointless, riding around in circles in an elaborately constructed environment. And all the cars with bike racks on annoyed me ... if I'm going to go cycling, I prefer to go somewhere.
But I'm glad you enjoy your MTBing. Don't let a curmudgeonly old git like me put you off.

"I hit the big lines straight away and busted out some big motowhips"

I started MTB'ing in 87 and terms like that were definately not the order of the day, I say !

Though crack I think it means: I rode the single tracks forthwith AND done some jumps/bunnyhops

= I'm self concious about my advancing age and am trying to appear young.

"...so scout around before busting suicide jumps"

= I'm old enough for it to actually hurt when I fall off.

Thats Grizedale, a great starting point and a fun lil ride, there are much better purpose built trails about though, tougher and longer

That's the one. Given a choice, I'd rather have gone off into the hills on foot with an OS map. I prefer my fun a bit less manufactured.

I share your view regarding MTB'ing... and I'm a miserable old Bastard.
In my case we did that stuff when we were young, on tatty old 3-speeds with fat tyres and bar-brakes 'cos we couldn't afford Holdsworths. I feel absolutely no more need to repeat the experience especially since technology has advanced. Rough Devon tracks on a 1940's Hercules 3 speed, now that's an experience!

I used to use a Dawes Kingpin shopper bike for it. I eventually broke the frame at the bottom bracket going over a jump, but it lasted pretty well, all things considered.

stupidly went off-road once instead of road-riding. fractured my collarbone and banged my ribs up pretty bad. was off work for 7 weeks in the summer which was quite good-timing but the first 2 weeks weren't much fun.

damn suicide jumps.

MBUK has always been aimed at younger readers, so it's hardly surprising that the language used reflects that. Words like "rad" and "gnarly" were being used when I used to read it in the early 1990s.

I don't know if they still do this, but they used to include explanations of descriptions used in bike reviews (e.g. what's a faux-bar suspension system).
