I believe there is a direct train from Yate/Bristol Parkway/Temple Meads.. Checked the current timetable and there is at least one direct train during weekdays but not weekends.

You can also travel to Southampton by rail quite easily and change there for Brighton, although it would be less stressful to go the day before and stay over as suggested by @vernon.

Do you mean this one?

The trains around London seem pretty unreliable right now (wrong type of leaves, heavy rain, trespassers getting squished, fires on trains among other 'incidents' recently), even if there was a way to get there by 9, I wouldn't risk it as at least one train will be buggered. Also, there seems to be some nonsense or other on the M25 every morning if thinking of driving, and the M23 isn't immune either (although the roadworks between the M25 & Gatwick have been cleared, or they had been a couple of weeks ago). Stay close the night before I'd say

At the moment it's getting ridiculous as if we go for the following week then she has to be in Plymouth the day before, same procedure of getting there for 9 ish and all day! But she won't consider this one as she says it is too near for her to prepare for!
