Well I can't really see how the brand of one chain would differ too much from another. I already have the chain recommended earlier in the thread. I really don't a few hours spent taking apart wheel that isn't that fantastic anyway when I can instead spend less time buying better wheels.

I'm thinking perhaps a Park Tools home mechanic starter kit might be a better buy than the two individual bits I was planning on to take the cassette off my current bike...

KMC make Shimano chains so they make both great and crap chains?

The current range of Shimano chains is very good. Check this review of chains on page 44 of Tour Quarterly where Shimano come out on top.

My own experience is that the Ultegra 6700 chain is vastly superior to KMC X10-93 in terms of quality, toughness and imperviousness to rust, although the KMC X10SL is a great but expensive chain. Not all KMC chains are the same and they're definitely not all great.

When you put the circlip back on make sure you get it the right way round so it goes through the derailers closed end first

Circlip? Not on a road bike chain. The spit link is symmetrical and self locking.
