Hi @Devondump and :welcome: to CycleChat.

I think possibly you might have mistaken us for a motorcycle and trike forum. Having said that, we have people on here from all walks of life, and a good number of petrol-heads including some former Reliant owners so you may still find the expertise you are looking for.

What's the problem you're having with it?

The Reliant engine was actually based on the Austin 7 engine, first produced in 1922. That's way before BL came into existence.;)

Yes, the basic design is.
Reliant did refine it over the years and then produced their own improved engine at 850cc, but it's lineage can be traced directly back to the early 1920s.

I really thought they were A series lumps.
Ive worked on loads of A series and thought they were the same engine.
Hard to believe its neatly a 100 yr old ..but thats the internal combustion engine for you

The bottom ends might have been the same - the Austin was a side valve and the Reliant OHV.
The original Reliant engines were side valve. As I said previously, Reliant refined the engine over the years and finally developed their own 850 cc engine which was ohv.
One of the first improvements was to change from a 2 bearing crank to a 3 bearing crank to stop crank whip at higher rpm. A mate of mine raced an original Austin 7 and I had to machine 0.5 mm off the top of the centre two pistons to stop them hitting the head at more than 6000 rpm.

A pal of mine had a Robin, he's an active member of a mine exploration group and cave rescue. Quite a lot of meets are up farm tracks, which can be interesting in a car with a single wheel up front.
