I had a trivial but very nice experience yesterday. I was labouring in my friends garden and his elderly neighbour came out to cut his front lawn. I asked him how long he'd lived there and he said since 1974. He told me all about the history of the housing estate, and the reason the houses are so far down in a dip is because they should have built them 20 feet from the road, but mistakenly built them 20 metres from the road. There was supposed to be an access road with garages behind, but that had to be scrapped because they'd already started building when they noticed their mistake.

Generally, he was a really nice chap and this type of exchange is something I've never really had with a neighbour. I think it's the type of thing that we're losing in this country. Not to blame anyone in particular, but as my (Gen X) generation have grown up, we seem to be more private and not make time for an over-the-fence chin-wag

Some good customer service has pleased me.

Earlier in the year I spent a lot of money on a digital cockpit upgrade for the van. The guy that does them is an enthusiast, a one man band. Awoke this morning to an email from him advising there's a software update available, and he remembers me saying I have the computer skills of a blacksmith so when he's in the area he'll pop round and install the update for free. This made me smile.
