awesome, thank you all for your comments. B) i think it was most likely that the tube was under the bead and the bang was the tyre being pushed off the rim and the tube going pop at the same time. the tyres are pretty tight on these wheels, so make a hell of a noise when stretching them over the lip of the rim.

whilst i do check that the tyre is seated properly once i've put a little air in the tube, i'm going to make sure i can't see the tube before i put any air in it. thanks for the tip.
