Ah, how do you know? Have you done a properly conducted double blind survey?
The Beeb's mini-test did point out that people can tell the difference between different brands, because some are better quality than others - but not between the different styles of the same brand.
I find that Lidl's chunks taste exactly the same as their steaks to me. And all are considerably improved by draining out the food-grade sunflower oil and tipping on (sorry, can't bring myself to 'drizzle') some decent olive oil.

Presumably they mashed the steaks and chunks up until they were the same kind of slurry as the flakes for this test, then? It's the texture, and the fish to oil ratio, that you are paying for.

I picked up a new can opener a short while ago and on making myself some tuna fish sarnies for today I notice that it cuts the top off the can rather than removing the lid . Now I have the problem of draining the tuna , with the old way I could press the lid into the can and drain . I really could do without tuna fish based challenges at 630 in the morning
Sorted... Apply said can opener and turn until approx 25% open.
Remove said opener and place on opposite side of lid and repeat, leaving you with the can opened partly on opposing sides (not ends).
Place can on side of sink with one part opened to drain into the sink and the other opened section at the vertical to let air in.
Leave for 5- mins whilst reviving your spring onions and prep other sandwich/salad ingredients.
Return to can and use said can opener to open remainder

Job done.

Oh, I forgot... Rinse the sink else it'll stink to high heavens by the time you come home.

I think they did, but hey, it's what passes for a scientific test at the Beeb.

IME the fish/oil ratio is the same in chunks and steaks, and I do break steaks into chunks anyway in my kedgeree, so I reckon that buying chunks gives me the best combination of value for money and intellectual rigour.

That's the way I've always done it - though not 25% each side.

And I hate ring pull cans of any type - I turn them over and open the opposite end

I dispute that. Any what is tuna doing in your kedgeree anyway? Flakes are only fit for the cat.

It is accompanying my steamed rice, dismantled hard boiled egg, chopped spring onion, a suspicion of peas and roasted peanuts - and a few ounces of smoked mackerel if it has been a good week with the cart.

Quite so. Even though I don't have a cat.

Peanuts? I'm giving up this one as a lost cause.

Anyway, this is the stuff you want:

It reminds me of my childhood. My mother was an excellent traditional Scottish cook, brought up in the Borders in the 1940s - and in the 50s, when I was there to consume it, kedgeree was dangerously racey so she used to put a few peanuts in to emphasis its exoticism. Anyone of that era will probably recognise curry with raisins, too (which I have grown out of!).

Anyway, this is the stuff you want:
I shall look out for it next time I am in CC Continental Supermarket in Chapeltown Road - Vernon might have to give me a steer.

Its really quite simple. One day my wife prepped my lunch and I didnt like it...turns out she had accidently bought tuna flakes instead of chunks. I had no prior knowledge of the type of tuna used....is that blind enough? lol

I FEEL YOUR PAIN!

I have tuna wraps for lunch everyday without fail. I can't tell you how many tin openers I have been through, I am "this" close to splashing out on an electric tin opener but now I'm concerned I'll have the same issue as you! I hadn't considered the possibility of them cutting from the sides rather than the top of the can.

Also - Don't you hate it sometimes when you are squeezing the lid into the can and suddenly it creases in the middle and sends a jet of murky brine all over your top?! Not fun....

Oh, and did I mention I don't even like tuna...
Probably best not to rub your hand vigorously back and forth along the can before you try to open it

I saw a real tuna once, deep frozen, going round and round on an airport baggage carousel surrounded by the debris of the polystyrene carton from which it had burst under its own weight. I think it had flown in from somewhere like Vancouver. I often wonder if the proud angler ever got his tuna back and in what condition, or whether the baggage handlers ate it.

Yes, that would do. I reckon flakes are the fish equivalent of Mechanically Recovered Meat.

I hope you pushed your chair back with a curse, rose to your full 6' 4" and bellowed "Woman! Get yourself in here!"
