I've just got the Tacx Bushido Smart it's relatively quiet but my wife pointed out its quiet in the room, but if you are in the room below if using upstairs it sounds a lot louder. I tend to use it downstairs where the floors are solid a lot quieter that way, including for the neighbours.

I used mine last night and even with smooth turbo tires they are not quiet. I would say if you really spin it up they would be classed as noisy. Mine is going in the garage.

Are magnetic resistance once really that noisy? I want one to use in the kitchen but it's right under the kids' bedrooms... Would I be better off with a s/h fluid one?

Very good point about the speed, I have an injury at present so my cadence is not high which would make for a quieter ride

if you use a lower gear the trainer will not be going round as fast and will be quieter.

Ive got this turbo and its fine! Not too noisy unless youre giving it the beans. Make sure you have the cable routed out the way of the back wheel or its easy to let it touch and wear it away! Was using setting 3 now up to setting 4. I'm becoming addicted to mine

Looks like I may be on the market for a new one. I did have an original Tacx fan based turbo (noisy as hell) and lent that to a friend, but he has since lost it so we agreed a small fee recently as I'll need it back now m back is broken and he no longer cycles.

I've been given some tokens for Amazon from colleagues at work and it seems the safest way to rebuild fitness once the docs give me the OK is to ride a turbo trainer. As mentioned in other threads, I will not be commuting by bike ever again, so I just want something for a short blast of upto 45 mins. It will be in the garage, so noise not an issue. Would like variable resistance Budget upto £150 as I've no guarantee I'll get this money back. No need for video or data link up or out like that. It will be a case of a steady hard 45 minute ride.

A couple of the Tacx range about £120 seem to fit the bill like the T2500 booster but the reviews are a bit strange saying the resistance is a bit high - what ? Have they got sparrow legs or something.

A couple of my mates have got tacx variable, and I think those ones have 10 steps, but they are only using up to 3-4 steps (and they are not weaklings) so there's loads of scope to go harder! My elite volare is fine too with 5 steps, although I'm on step 4 so only 1 step higher I can go. I don't alter the resistance with mine just my gears. Obviously some people like to have it set fairly weak so they can pedal along at high speed thus covering a lot of miles!

@fossyant Road.cc I think done a good review the other day on trainers. I think if I was going for one again I'd go for an entry level fluid trainer.
Ive got a direct drive elite Muin and whilst its great its no got any resistance setting.
My old trainer was a Tacx Speedmatic and compared to the Muin its resistance is low. I think Justin is right!
