Turning right on busy road

When I did my cycle training back in the 80's in junior school,we were told if turning right and moving across traffic coming from behind was not safe at that time, to stop at the kurb and wait for a safe gap to proceed with right turn. Is this still the way it is taught?.Just asking as I do see alot of younger riders taking silly risks when turning right.

Still sensible advice, but if you can get out into primary before the junction then you have more control over the traffic around you.

Yes very much agree with you in getting the correct road position in good time before making a turn and getting the required space.Just see to many people make sudden right turns with no real observation of their own position or others.Perhaps its just something we become more aware of through experiance.

Sometimes, due to weight of traffic, it can be impossible to get out into primary to turn right. So I stop at the side of the road & wait like this.

I will still stop at the kerb and then walk the bike across the junction if I can't get across confidently and safely.

No shame being risk averse.

Yes we as young cyclists in the 80's going through school cycle training where always taught that if in doubt of your own saftey whilst on the road,it was best to be cautious and put yourself in a safe position untill you felt it was safe to continue.This is how I aproach cycling on our roads and thankfully have very few problems.Cheers for your feedback,nice to know others also aproach situations with some caution and with personal saftey in mind.
