TV Remote wait...

Can anyone explain why my tv remote wont operate the tv after i have turned it on until about 5 mins have elapsed?

How old is the TV / remote? i.e. is it a modern HDTV flat panel thing?

our digital box won't take a command to change channel from the remote until the information display (the channel and brief description of the programme) has disappeared

it will respond to commands to exit (close the aforementioned display), access menu's, play DVD's at which point it closes the dialogue and does it.

It's a 6 month old telly and the delay before you could operate the telly with the remote was about 30 seconds though since moving the tv into a alcove the delay is now about 5 mins. It seems like the tv gives out some kind of radiation or something.

It gives out IR and it can jam the signal, but it's usually a fairly rare phenomenon to completely snarl it up for so long.
