I think you're thinking of Johnny Weismuller, tho' I suspect he was from the early movies in the '30s/'40s rather than the tv progs you remember.

I know it was Weismuller in the movies - who's recorded yell was used for all future Tarzans.
There were movies with Gordon Scott and Buster Crabbe.
The early colour TV series was Ron Ely.
