Type of red light jumping

On another thread it was discussed that when it came to RLJing drivers would tend to jump just as the lights had changed and cyclists would tend to creep over further into the red light phase.

This chap obviously hadn't read the thread...

There's always one!

Just had a strange one at Walthamstow Central...Was walking the bike across the road and thought it was safe but then realised that a 48 bus was stoming towards me.(from the west)...I was walking easterly. The reason I thought it was safe was the other traffic was jumping a red?(From the South) traffic light (lots of cars)(Cutting across this 48) with this 48 coming at me like a tank.I wasn't that worried although I thought i'd get out the way as I was sure he would hit the rljing? cars before it got to me.

I take it the 48 had right of way but I think his driving was a bit agressive towards the rljing? cars at temporary lights.(and he was blowing the horn...can't remember if he was flashing his lights as well)

I really don't know what was going on with or at lights though.

Sun was shining towards the traffic from the north...did someone make a mistake and they all proceed in following him with the 48 storming from the west

I hope this makes sense but it probably doesn't.

I'm not condoning it in the UK, however in the States (West cost at least), everyone goes though red lights when turning right (would be left over here). It's one of those things which strickly speaking is illegal, but if you're driving, and you don't turn right at a red (assuming it's clear, obviously), you'll get peeped. I've even seen the cops do it (and they’re a stickler for the rules, especially in southern CA!).

I agree, on this occasion it wasn't particularly dangerous, and yes in some states of the US a maneuver like this is legal. The video is a little tongue in cheek, but there is a serious side to it. Driver impatience, and a willingness to flout rules when you can get away with it.

The video doesn't show it, but the driver looked at me angrily as he saw me question his maneuver. I'm sure he mouthed something insulting at me as if it was my fault!

I got tutted in another (non-cycling) forum for admitting I RLJ controlled pedestrian crossings at my own risk when there is no pedestrian in sight. Does anybody here have a problem with that and why?

I love the fact that bad drivers (and cyclists too to be fair) blame anyone that questions them. Yeah.. like I have control over your bleedin vehicle too. Dumb*ss!

If iot wasn't for all the free-riding cyclists on the road there'd be no need for Traffic Lights in the first place. Car drivers would harmoniously go about there lawful business in an orderly and polite manner.

Well, not really. But seeing as we're freeloading on roads that their Road Tax paid for, it's only fair that we don't get to use the traffic lights put up for their benefit

Now that's the best argument I've every heard for RLJing.

Shame on you. You could have hit the Invisible Man.

Ref. Ellison or Wells.
