Please can you help with tyre size query. Is a tyre marked 700x42C(42-622) the same size as a tyre marked 37-622(28x140-700x35C) and is this also the same as a tyre marked 40-622(28x1.50-700x38C). I'd like to know whether these three tyres are interchangeable from a wheel diameter perspective. Very many thanks in advance for your help.

The important thing is the wheel diameter. In this case they are all 622mm so they should all fit on the same wheel.
They are different widths though, 42, 37 and 40mm. There may not be enough clearance between your forks for the wider tyres.

622 is the ETRTO designation for the 700c rim/tyre size. It is sometimed called 28" but not in the UK.
32/35/38/40/42 refers to the nominal width of the tyre. All of those tyre widths are usually comptible with standard hybrid style bikes and can be interchanged. The limit is clearance at the fork or the rear stays of the frame. You can get fatter and thinner tyres. Rims have a range of tyre widths that will work for each rim width.

So, yes.
