tyre width

Hi I have some Marathon Dureme tires 26 x 2.00 is it safe to put them on a rim size width of just 17 mm? they do go on ok but not sure if its safe.

Is that 17mm outer or inner width?

If it's outer width I'd be concerned about the tyre stability. I'd expect a 17mm inner width to be okay but you might find the bike has a bit of wander.

thank you for the reply. it seemed ok the bike seemed steady and handled ok i more concerned that tomorrow i am off on a loaded tour for a few night i didn't realise that the back rim was wider then the front til this evening so I was little worried about the overall safety

Wide tyres on narrow rims give more sloppy, squidgy handling on corners than wide tyres on wide rims, as I understand it.
