All my contis in the last 5 years have suffered splits at the side wall, its not bad luck on your part the tyres are weak there.Jury is still out for me on the Contis they may well roll well, they may be puncture resisitant, but I've had three split on me. Probably just bad luck and nothing to do with the tyre, but the other two brands of tyres I've used, Vitoria and Bontrager have not yet split.
Because mine have been bomb-proof over the years. Punctures were a rarity. Why?

I sympathise greatly, when I was a student I bought the cheaper base Gran Prix 's' and they split both split at low mileage and IIRC one of them was only on their 2nd or 3rd ride out. That primarily inspired me to look around and I found the th Mitch Kyrlion Carbon's (now rebranded Pro 4 Endurance) to be the best all round for grip/roll/wear/p'ture resistance/cost. For a few years I ran the Krlion Carbons all year round.Interesting, that's where mine have split, the last one done less than 200 miles...still had the nobly bits on. I am most pi$$ed off about it.
