My two top front teeth met with a nasty accident about 20 years ago and are now crowns, last night one fell out.

Isn't super glue brilliant! And cheap.

Doesn't taste great though.

I hadn't seen a dentist in about 20 years but couldn't ignore the pain from a damaged tooth any longer late last year so booked myself to see one. I was terrified, and expected a huge lecture on neglect, etc. Two small fillings, a scrape and polish later, it was all rather painless and she said my teeth and gums were better than average for someone of my age. I will keep up with the regular checkups now, I think. She is a world apart from the dentist when I was at school who managed to cause pain no matter what he did.

It's a bit more complicated than that...
I don't have dental insurance any more. I cancelled the policy after reaping the benefit for a year.

My dentist is great. Invest in a good toothbrush and or good cleaning regime. Yearly checkup and xrays cost me no more than £20. Even at times when I've not been for some time, and needed a number of fillings it's been less than £60.

My wife has had a bad time with a dentist - perforated a tooth doing a root canal. - ended up sueing the dentist as she then had to go to a specialist for a tooth implant. Cost nearly £3k to get sorted. Since pregnancy, her teeth have suffered, and she now needs a crown. To replace with a cosmetic one is about £800 private, and a few hundred for a silver. She's gone cosmetic.

My brother is a dentist, and they have a hell of alot of costs to pay out, constant training, and all are self employed. They also have numerous patient targets.

Is it safe?

As a result of reading this thread, I have subconsciously started to run the tip of my tongue over all my teeth.

I have a wonderful dentist, she is young, atractive and quite small. She up ends the chair I am in to hoke around in my mouth. She leans over and wedges my head between her breasts and does whatever she wants. I've not heard anything she has said for my last 3 visits I just nod and drool. When she is finished she sets the chair up right I go dizzy and she takes money off me. I don't have any problems with my teeth so she must be doing something right. All on the NHS too.
I have private dental insurance but the small print is that they'll hardly pay out a penny until you've been with them for two years, and crowns etc are more like five years!
I used to have insurance.

I joined my current dental practice several years ago and after a check up with no problems I was encouraged to join an insurance scheme. A few weeks later I had tooth ache and ended up with a deep filling, two root canals, and two gold crowns. the insurance covered the costs.

Shortly after I had to stop paying the insurance as my income changed. It was worth it at the time though.
