I keep having to tell myself that each generation thinks the newer one is flawed. And that I'm just turning into my parents. Just on a bit bigger scale due to the more exponential growth of the virtual world

Sadly it's the world we live in now. A blanket warning has to be issued because there are still those who don't have any common or practical sense. Or those who simply do what they want and think that their little bubble they live in does not have any consequence for anyone else.

You've hit the nail squarely on the head, people have no idea of, if you do something stupid, there will be consequences, the same stupid people who go on holiday with no insurance, do something stupid, get injured then go on a Go Fund Me scam to pay for it all

The alert is switched off on my phone but we were at Whitby brewery with most of the camp site (pop up camp by the Abbey for the weekend) and I had visions the campsite had gone up (eg someone silly enough to have a BBQ). There are signs up throughout Yorkshire saying no fires or BBQ.

The campsite has specifically said no BBQ but people are still asking, I have a tabletop coal BBQ. Nope not evrn on a table as the heat dissapates onto the table. Idiots.

Alerts don't get to you if you happen to live in a "Not Spot" (like many rural areas ...those rural areas full of dry grass and forest ...").

I have 2 SIMs but without mobile coverage rely on WiFi Calling and no alerts.

A national emergency alert only has value if it both alerts the population to an event that they are unlikely to have knowledge of and where there is action they can take in response.

Using the national emergency alert system to basically report on an ongoing event that even the most news averse citizen is probably aware of will probably just motivate more folk to turn the alerts off. (Worse in this case it may motivate some to go and start more wildfires)

The alerts cannot mandate actions that aren't already specified in law. (So we can ignore something like this: Alert Alert! Theres an invasion of French motorists so drive on the right from now on)

Without wanting to get into NCAP areas, my impression it the alert was more about the Government trying to look like they are doing something where reality is there isn't much they can do short term.

Why are so many people bothered by this? It’s hardly an invasion of privacy and could be useful to some.

because like the boy who cried wolf alot, when the one time its needed comes around everyone will be ignoring it.

it should only be used for national (and emphasis on the national part) emergencies that require people to take an immediate action because their lives are in danger if they dont. it should not be used for telling you not to set fire to things or use disposable bbqs, that is an abuse of the system.

because it will then get used all the time, like I guarantee theyll now use it during the atlantic storm season to warn us that its a bit windy, or that its snowing abit in winter, and then it will be the UV is high today wear sunscreen or get your flu jabs and it will become completely trivialised.

that we live in a world where some people apparently feel the need of the government to tell them this stuff in this way, much like we have ended up with the weather forecasters telling us to drink water and wear a hat outside when it sunny, instead of just letting us use our own judgement that its hot and sunny, is an indictment of the modern world.

The authorities have gone a bit OTT with their warnings in redent years.

Anyone remember when a Class 9 Murder Deathlill Arctic Slaughter Event was known as "a bit parky out"?

These warnings are becoming so frequent and meaningless people will just ignore them and will end up having the opposite effect to that intended.
