Friday was the first time it has ever been used nationally, and so many of you think it's overkill and have turned off the alerts.

The other problem with the alarms:

Those who maybe have a secret phone to assist them as they are a victim of domestic violence and are planning on escaping it; hopefully the alarms and notifications are disabled so it doesn’t come to the attention of their abuser.

Then, there are those with a secret phone for other reasons such as because they are having an affair etc. Wonder how many are now finding a solicitor to deal with the consequences of their actions, unless of course your polyamorous by mutual agreement.

Which maybe highlights the "Cry Wolf" problem. The more "blindingly obvious" warnings they send, the more people will disable them (how many receiving the message were not aware of wildfire risks?). So when there is a real imminent disaster you need to act on now (ie not tomorrow after you've spent the evening watching TV) increasing numbers won't be receiving that warning.

Did it on the current handset when it was bought in 2018. So there's never been any alerts received on it.

For that, they will probably be using the top level alert, which can't be turned off. That was what was confusing me earlier in the thread, I didn't realise there were different levels and all bar teh top one can be turned off.

I have the option to disable "Severe Alerts" and a separate option to disable "Extreme Alerts" is there something above "Extreme"?

My personal phone went off at approximately 11:30pm but my work phone didn’t. Odd as they are both on EE. Even more odd as I understand it was an England and Wales alert and I am in Scotland.

We didn't get any alerts here in the Glasgow area.

A lot of elderly people were left frightened and confused by the Welsh only alert. Which came about 10 minutes earlier than English where we live. I can read enough to work out what it was about but the majority cant.

Why on earth Welsh and English version couldnt have been sent in one message is beyond me.

I was at home ~40 miles from the border.

I guess the alerts go out to phones that are in the alert zone that the government decides to alert.

I switched off the alerts the day the system was launched. I've survived nearly 59 years without needing Big Brother to tell me the bleeding obvious.

And they used it for the aforementioned bleeding obvious and not the impending disaster the public were informed it would be used for.

They were discussing this on Radio 4 this morning. Apparently the system provides for four different levels of alert, but the bottom one isn't used in the UK, and the top one can't be disabled.

yes they are caused by humans absolutely, but theyre still wildfires, because wildfires are fires that are burning uncontrolled and are literally out of our control, thats why they are called wildfires.
