NT have more outdoorsy stuff, moors and coastline etc, and loads of stately homes. EH have more castles and industrial heritage stuff.

If you're a Tesco shopper you can get EH membership cheaply via Clubcard deals. EH and NT both worth having a look at for Yorkshire or Northumberland.

The North Norfolk coast. Probably my favourite place in England.

Probably struggle to make it in 3 hours from Carlisle, though.

@shouldbeinbed a few friends have stayed at haggerston castle, but we had a bad experience with haven at Easter so I'd rather avoid them.
Struggling to find a cottage within budget that isn't already booked pretty much anywhere at the moment though :-(

Definitely worth the drive, but as we're leaving one child home alone wee want to be able to get back quickly in case of emergency.
@HF2300 we've done Scarborough and Whitby a few times, and enjoyed it,but I'd like something new.
I'm tempted to go to Whitley bay, but as we usually do it as a day trip I'm not sure its worth it.

We based ourselves in Belford which seemed to make getting to all the places mentioned pretty straightforward.

Shaun

PS roughly where are you in Cumbria?

Sorry Sandra, didn't realise. Still a nice place to go though!

Derby.
Me and the girls stayed in Wemyss Bay just down the coast from Glasgow. Easy train ride into the big city for the museums and stuff, ferries to various small islands. An Nardini's cafe in Largs - best ice cream sundaes ever!

The NE England recommendations have been excellent, so I'll chuck the West Coast of Scotland into the mix. You can get to some very nice Inner Hebridean islands and the Trossachs in around 3 hours. A beautiful part of the world with plenty to keep you occupied.
Yeah, midges.
It is nice though.

I absolutely LOVE Robin Hoods Bay.
Loads of great walks, fab bike ride to Whitby or Scarborough (or you can catch the bus).
Nice village to potter round, brilliant beach, fossil hunting, good cafes, pubs, etc.
LOVE it!

I was fairly sold on Northumbria, but wemyss bay looks great. Nice cheap and cheerful caravan park too.
Thanks again for the input.
