I did decide I would only smoke my favourite after dinner cigarette from now on but eating 40 dinners a day is expensive and makes me fat.

20 a day will kill you. Or maybe make you a bit sore.

It shows how out of touch and arrogant this totalitarian government has become. Smokers don't buy fags because of a nice shiny packet, they buy them because of the taste.

I thought the idea was to remove the alure of the shiny packing in an effort to reduce children and teens taking up smoking.

however, as a graphic designer I can see it failing as, in order to identify the packet from the others on the shelf, the company has their name applied in a minimalistic fashion in the top right corner as their rival goes for centrally placed round-hand type

and instantly everyone who loves apple's minimalist design starts smoking :P

if we're going for plain packaging on fags, shouldn't we also insist on 'adult' magazines being sold in silver plastic wraps that only show the title of the magazine as some news-agents have started doing?

Just did a bit of research on this for Molson Coors - in short, pubs are not closing because of the smoking ban. Crap pubs are closing. Badly run pubs are closing. Badly located pubs are closing. A huge number of pubs are doing really well - the ones that are well run and well located.
If you want a pub to survive, have a word with the landlord, tell them to do the job properly...

it also helps when the pub isn't being screwed over by their brewery
my father in law gave up his tennented pub as he could see it coming, being forced to buy a set amount of beer at a set price from his brewery when he could get the same cheaper from another supplier, having to have fewer guest ales on in order to actually get through the beer he'd been forced to buy etc

some brewerys are like this, some aren't

chain pubs such as weatherspoons who have the cash and turnover to buy close to date beer and run it as specials don't help things for independent pubs and tennented pubs.

It's a bit more complicated than that...

Supermarkets, and soon newsagents, have to hide their display of fags.

I could never work out how the 'club' can offer massively lower prices than the 'pub'.

Most working mens clubs work on a break even basis and any extras are usually spent on a "special" night,
The irony is that pubs whose owners/tenants need the profit are struggling to break even when in the not too distant past having a pub was like having a goldmine

this is a bit odd... the gigantic black door with Tobacco in big white letters i find very intriguing... much more so than the (old fashioned) shelves of little packets
But (and this was the point of the post I was referring to) it doesn't help the fag manfuacturers, whose products are only differentiated by branding, including packaging.

Don't see why, as AFAIK there's no link between adult magazines and cancer.

Fags are relative, you smoke the ones you were introduced too, unless you try and like. But yes addicted to them is the term id use too.
