If you don't like it - you don't have to drive.

Presumably you wouldn't consider driving in Holland in view of all the cyclists throwing themselves under cars so they can stitch you up and get payment for it.

I was referring a to a deeper cultural diiference. The Dutch have a much more socialist society than the UK. I'm just curious re whether the legal situation has a significant impact, ie would things be the way they are over here without the laws in place. A question that probably can't be answered

I don't have the time to go into this in depth, but check out the Fietsberaad website and you'll learn loads about the history of cycling in the Netherlands.

Put simply, Dutch cycling culture has undergone major shifts over the last 100 years and a theory of socialism = good cycling conditions is tenuous at best.

Yes the Dutch (among others) don't take the attitude that seven avoidable death day is acceptable, it has nothing to with socialism, you obviously don't know much about Dutch politics. Of course the legal situation has a significant impact, that is why the laws were introduced in the first place and there is no reason why it would be any different if such laws were introduced here...

That's an interesting and different discussion, but misses the point.

In Holland they already have the law, and I'm interested to know how often your concerns are realised. Do you know? The information will be somewhere, and you could justify your concerns. Or not.

I am pretty sure that cycling is safer in places that cycling is commonplace.I am also pretty sure, that this is spelt out by the last set of accident figures. Cambridge and Oxford for example are pretty comparable to Amsterdam/Rotterdam...whereas Nottingham is not!
