Hi guys, firstly their is one thing I need to say, I’m not riding this up coming event I’m running it, though I think you will be just as interested!

The plan is traveling 50 miles a day to run and walk from the UK to Kristianstad in Sweden. Traveling over 800 miles in as little days as possible, the only assisted transport will be a canoe in which I’ll roe the 22 miles over the channel from Denver to Caley.

As you could image organizing this is a nightmare, but the biggest problem im having is route planning, this usually isn’t a problem because im use to planning routes up and around mountains but when it comes down to running from place to place needing some where to stay it get difficult. Firstly if for some reason I am unable to the 50 miles on one day how am I going to find somewhere to stay? Is every thing pre booked (an idea that sounds mighty fine but seemingly imposable) or do I find a place wherever I can? This also makes me think; where can I stay, motels youth hostels are good but I don’t expect to be in one every night so ill have to camp (which im more than happy to do) but where can I camp? Can I just pitch up at the side of the road, under bridges in fields? And lastly, how many maps am I going to need! os maps are usually my choose but this is for short distances, to get os or the equivalent to go all the way through UK France Belgium Netherlands Germany Denmark and Sweden is going to be a nightmare just to find what map im on let alone any thing else. So is a GPS going to be useful, are they trust worthy?

Here's some online route planners:
http://maps.google.co.uk/
http://www.bikehike.co.uk/
http://www.openstreetmap.org/
http://www.viamichelin.com/
http://www.mapmyride.com/
http://www.bikely.com/
http://www.mapmyrun.com/

Have a play with them you will probably find at least one planner that will closely match your needs.

I'd transfer any route onto the pages torn out of road atlases - they are obtainable quite cheaply and if you buy a Philips' road atlas, camp sites are marked on the pages.

You must be really fit. I am happy doing 50 miles per day on my bike.

As for the legality of camping in the wild - it's legal in scotland and illegal in England. I know it's illegal in France but can not comment on other countries. In reality if you 'stealth camp' you are unlikely to get caught.

Try www.stantons.co.uk for your mapping requirements

Hope that helps.

Crikey:ohmy:...are you crazy or is there some other reason?
Best of luck with it though I am in awe of anybody who can run...I cant run even a few metres...thats what bikes are for isnt it?
Why don't you take a map laden support cycle rider with you to carry the gear (or are you?)

...what a superb venture:becool:;)...oh GPS...I feel qualified to answwer this having recently just bought one and tested it down the length of Germany and France on my bike...yes get one, yes they are useful, yes you will grow old and grey trying to learn how to use it. 50 miles a day running..is that humanly possible??? SUUUUperb!:smile:

haha, to put your mind at ease its not going to be completely running, walk 5 miles run 5. do that 10 times and your their, ive heard of people capable of running thoese distances but for me to be one of them i would have to quit my education and job and grow a phonominal near lust full enjoyment of running. when realy running is just a handy way to get from one place to another with out the worry of some one stealing your ride back home.

i have had my worries with GPS, only a few weeks ago i was almost driven thrugh a construction sight by a GPS system, not a clue how it new this road existed considering it missed some A roads!

Remember when asking directions that Kristianstad is that rare thing - a Swedish place-name that's not pronounced as it's spelled!
