Getting the name of the instrument right might be a good start...

I was advised by a teacher to spend at least £50 to get something that doesn't sound like a child's toy.

My little girl's teacher had one that cost £500 though.
it doesn't matter how much you spend, if it ain't strummed or plucked with feeling, they'll all sound like a toy. £30 quid'll get you a half decent beginners uke.

If it's chords you're after playing, cheat!

Multicoloured dots - mark the fingering for the C chord in red dots, for G in blue dots, etc ---- so much easier to get your fingers to just the right spot if you're looking for the "red". Works a treat every time

Play 10-15 minutes a day. Every day.

Don't sweat it, I've got two and can't play either of them!
