The uncomfortable truth is that Strava, like so many other web-based services, started free then became increasingly more expensive. Also, as mentioned above, it seems to affect the personalities of its users.

I use Strava to get free money at Decathlon, to track bike mileage so I know when I need services etc and so it gets captured in our works CO2 emissions log as saved/avoided emissions.

If you link Strava to the Decathlon members account and record 3hrs of activity per week then you get 150points.
Once you hit 3000 points you get a £5 voucher to use, 6000 £10 and so on. Useful for replacing consumables.

I have my father's diaries and notebooks going back to the 1930's. How many Strava records will be accessible in the 21st century?

Good Point
when I started using my bike properly again I noticed an article about a "500 miles in July" challenge sponsored by some companies and offering some prizes - not much but something to do.

you had to use a bike ride monitor - like Strava - called Endomondo

I managed the whole thing - with days to go - and got the prizes
which were pretty much as trivial as I expected for a free thing

but the record was nice to have

Then the owners decided that Endomonda was not worth keeping going and I was told I could download everything but I had to do it by a certain date
but my the time I did it - a few days later - the data available had been reduced to only a year or so - and I lost the challenge data

which was a right pain
must look up who owned Endomondo as I intended to boycott them!

They may still be in the loft.
When I was very young, I used to be given the CTC Diaries. They had a little section on each day to record mileage. I used to record every ride, some mega rides, like going to shops in Prescot.

A whole three mile round trip!

There was an old boy in my club when I was a kid who joined the 'illustrious 300,000 mile club'. I often wondered how he'd ever have recorded the mileage but this possibly explains.

The free version will do you fine, it’s only a little less BS than the premium. Insane really. Live segments is for knobbers who are usually young and very strong. Us middle age guys can’t compete with them.

The largest accumulated mileage on Strava currently sits at around 413,000 miles by some Australian called Bruce who got back into cycling around 2012. He's still going strong at around 3,000 miles per month.Just thinking about his maintenance bills makes me wince.

If I had enough money not to work I’d easily beat that if I wanted to but I’d only do it once as it’s a bit sad.
