Handy in a battle if you don't want your mate to lop your head off.

Handy for letting the enemy know who to shoot :gun:

This is exactly the problem, and the reason why it annoys those of us from the remaining nations which form the union. Some folks seem unable to differentiate between England, Great Britain, and the United Kingdom.

A lot of people use GB/UK interchangeably not realising that former excludes NI. I only acquired an understanding of the sensitivity, particularly post devolution, when working with cross border bodies.Whitehall has long form for ignoring/overlooking issues in devolved territories.

In one case the recruitment for the President of a Tribunal covering all of GB had to be re-advertised when it was pointed out that first version omitted reference to those qualified in Scotland.

Could someone please explain to the England fan waving the Union flag behind the posts of the French goal at the France v England six nations game, that the Union flag is not the England flag.
That is all.
The Six Nations is a strange competition - I've lived in england half my life but was born in Ireland to English parents, had a Welsh rugby mad grandmother who married a Scotsman. I reckon that makes me British and gives me the legitimate option to supporting any of the home Nations. I think there are a few people like me. For them the Union flag actually makes sense, solving various situations where they might chose to support one team or other…. But the key thing here is it isn't the French Tricoleur (sp..?!). There is no way you might misconstrue flying the Union flag to be an act of supporting the French in this situation.
So I say, give them a break, they made the effort to schlep over to Paris and get behind the England team so respect is due!

Indeed - for such folk the Union flag is better than carrying 4 or 5 different flags

Here for rides.
Entire genetic inheritance from grandparents back is Irish
Lived in Welsh-speaking west Wales for long enough to be part Welsh by osmosis
Married to a Welsh-Irish cross-breed
Quite fond of Scotland
Lived for a very short while in France
Ate lunch in Italy once.

When Wales play I root for Wales except
When Ireland play I root for Ireland except
When England play anyone else I'm 100% English.

If you look closely, there is a red dragon sitting at the heart of the cross of St.George.
Very effective camouflage indeed.
