Appears to be something missing between the upper scaffolding platforms!

Yeah those gable lifts give just a bit of a hint as to where the gables are going to be!

Isn't it normal practice to raise the scaffolding platforms as the work height increases, not before.

Scaffold built first and you don't lift the Main scaffold, you lift the hop ups.

On the continent these are almost always used as infill for a cast in situ reinforced concrete frame. That may be good enough, in terms of thermal performance, in Greece or Spain or Southern France or whatever, but it isn't good enough for here. There would always be "cold bridging" through the concrete structure, no matter how warm the rest of the walls were. That's why these things, which are ubiquitous on the continent, aren't typically seen here.

I'd be interested to know more about the building they're being used to construct. I have never seen these extruded clay blocks used in a load-bearing situation, so I'd like to see what is holding up the roof and first floor. I'm betting that there is a steel or concrete frame somewhere, which only means a whole lot of detailing issues getting insulation onto the insides of the framework.

Perhaps it's being built for Rachel Whiteread, and they're going to fill it with concrete afterwards.

Which is normal practice though, you raise the working platforms into place as required.

No the scaffold should have 3 levels with the 3rd platform just below the bottom of the roof so the roofers can step off the scaffold straight onto the roof, one tower either side for building the gables, apart from hop ups brickies, roughcasters, roofers, etc shouldnt need to alter the scaffold.

Looks like they never had enough scaffold to do the building in the picture correctly so only did 2 levels.

The scaffold is built up as support for the trussed rafter roof when it's under construction.

Not with timber frame buildings, when a free-standing full-height scaffold is erected after the plinth and prior to to the arrival of the frame on site.

These little gable lifts were presumably put up simply because it was easier to do all the scaffold in one go, rather than return and erect them when required. They're not in the way so there is no reason not to have them there a little ahead of when they'll be needed.

No it isn't. It is for gable access. It would be pretty suspect practise to use scaffolding as support for a part-built roof.

TBF to @threebikesmcginty the joiners before they used cranes to erect roofs would maybe lift a few trusses up and lean them against the scaffold before putting them in place, not as a support for the roof though.
