Thinking on it I'm also not sure about you bringing the 'think of the children' angle into this either.

Whatever.

I was just trying to suggest a little kindness, tolerance, patience towards our fellow humans.

I doubt if the people on the till are really concerned if you have a pop and choccy for £2, or if you have anti freeze with your radiator. They have to say it, their boss has told them to. Its not too difficult to say "No thanks, Im not interested" is it?

Just a thought to all those that are rude to the staff...

Have you not considered that one day your kids will be working those sorts of jobs, or maybe you other halves... or maybe yourselves? How would you feel standing in a que to be served by one of your sprogs only for someone in front of you to tell them to "F*ck off, nobber!" just because they offered a £2 fizzy drink and choccy deal?

My eldest son made this point quite forcibly to me some 10 years ago. At the time as a 17 year old he had a student job in a local call centre. It was a dive and all the local kids did it.

One Friday evening during our meal the phone went, "May I speak to Mrs PaulSB?" "Yes I'll just get her" places phone on windowsill and carries on eating. Standard practice in our house. Son then says "You realise that could be me, Dad?" Point taken and I always try to be polite in these circumstances.

Interestingly No.1 son now has a very successful career in clothes retailing, often encouraging his staff to hit account sign up targets!!

I was lucky, I hated the high pressure sell thing being forced on us my managers but I left and got a better job. Now, with jobs as they are, people can't just say they don't like it and move on. They have to attempt to sell the extras at the till or be put under even more pressure. I am polite when asked, they have asked and I have said no so job done.

I work at a main dealer, we are constantly told to gather customer details with every sale

All so they can be out into the database and mail shot(?) at a later date.

All they wanted was a bottle of screenwash and I'm there asking for their particulars just so we can clog up their inbox with stuff they didn't ask for.

Strangely most people give all these details, I would tell me to sod off personally.
To me good customer service is getting what you want when you want it without the fuss.

I never EVER give this info out. And I explain why

ooh. extra post has appeared. Sold to me by aliens!

btw - Kwik Fit in E Anglia have been very good. Last visit they had to clean out tyre re-inflated with gunky stuff (no spare wheel - tin of this stuff supplied instead) and check for puncture. They couldn't find anything and they charged nowt for half an hour's labour. And the tyre has been fine since.... they reckoned someone had let it down. Hope it wasn't the bloke standing by my car saying he had noticed the flat tyre . Boy he must have been disappointed when he saw me if it was a cunning ploy
