Yes, I actually did think it was a nice thing to do, not what I am used to though.

I was taught to do it for girls/women, to prevent splashes from the gutter more than any slim chance of being walloped by a car. My boys have been taught likewise. It may no longer be fashionable, but it seems a nice gesture.

When my children were little, we walked roadside of them partly because they can dart off and it was a sort of margin.

I still cannot sit in a restaurant or at a dinner table until the women are all seated. Sometimes a waiter stands behind me motioning me onto a chair and I think "Haven't you noticed the women are still standing?"

I like to open doors (or hold them open) for just about everybody. Gender doesn't come into that. It makes just about everyone smile, except except tattooed wannabe thugs who either have an Impreza or dream of having one. They just grimace and look away. I imagine they think I'm attracted to them and can't deal with it.

I think I may be ready for pipe and slippers.

Yup (and just to annoy theclaud )

1) There's reaching it at the same time or before her, and he pulls it towards him and lets her go through first.

2) There's reaching it at the same time or before her, and it has to be pushed, so he pushes it, goes through first and then holds it open while she goes through.

3) There's reaching it at the same time or before her, and it has to be pushed, so he pushes it but thinks it impolite to go through first, so he stands holding it open, in the way, so that she has to push past him, possibly coming into bodily contact to do so.
(Of course the bodily contact might be the point, but if that is the only way he can get such contact, that is very creepy. :headshake:)

4) There's the she happens to reach it first, but he dashes around her to get it open for her, followed by 1), 2) or 3) above. 1&2 a bit silly, but not too annoying. 3 still .

5) Any of the above done with patronising look or comment. :headshake:

So, to change the subject, should we make helmet wearing mandatory?

I hold doors open for people too. Aren't we nice

I can't help but think you might have missed a couple off that list. Fortunately I can't remember what they are though.

Could one of those you've forgotten be the one where the poster refers to women as 'ladies', 'girls', or as in the case of the OP 'a lovely filly'?

Excellent, all received and understood. Thanks.

Why, you thinking of using your head to open the door with the next time?

No, but the oversensitive feminist may not like me opening the door for her and use it (the door or a hard stare) against me...
Or I may need the helmet to protect my head as I am banging it against the wall :banghead:

Of course, I actually couldn't care less either way, I hold the door open for everyone as a polite gesture.
