Hello, I am new to the forum but I was hoping I would be able to find some expert advice here as I did not have much luck elsewhere. I suspect my question is basic but I do not know a lot about bike maintenance so I miss even simple details.

Purchased Kona Rova AL 650 last year and yesterday I broke the RD Shimano Claris and the Kona Hanger (picture attached below).

I went to the service shop to see what can be done and mentioned I was thinking of upgrading the gearset to something with 10 gears. Unfortunately, my local shop and their contracted suppliers have no spare parts available and my only option is to try to source the parts myself. The problem is that the Tiagra line bike.shimano.com/en-EU/product/component/tiagra-4700.html offers many choices for each component, for example, back derailleurs come in two sizes, front in four sizes, three types of drop handlebars. I do not know what are the differences and which will and will not fit my bike.

I made some simple list of what I may need but I would be very grateful if anyone could suggest list of parts I need to replace the broken parts and upgrade from Claris to Tiagra.
  • [The original part needs replacement] Kona Hanger AA - There is another hanger but I think this is the one I need.
  • [The original part needs replacement] Shimano Tiagra HG500 10 Speed Cassette (11-34) - This matches the Claris cassette I think (except it is 10 and no 8).
  • [The original part needs replacement] RD-4700 Tiagra 10-speed rear derailleur, GS - There is also SS mounting, I do not know which will fit.
  • [The original part works] Shimano Tiagra Front Derailleur - No idea which mounting as there are various types.
  • [The original part works] ] e.g.: Tiagra ST-4700 Shifter - I do not know what is difference between double shifters and standard, or if I can buy separately. Hopefully if I don't source this part, the shop will be able to help there.
Do I need anything else?

Thank you for advice!

Probably easier and cheaper to buy it as a package deal https://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-tiagra-4700-groupset-10-speed

Hello and :welcome:

Upgrading an existing machine is definitely fun but if you are unsure of exactly what you need it can be an exercise in frustration.

  • You definitely need a new hanger - Kona will be best placed to advise.
  • Any 10 speed Shimano/SRAM cassette will work - you don't need to match the range exactly if availability is an issue
  • The GS and SS rear derailleurs mount exactly the same way, the difference is in range of gears they will handle. If unsure buy the GS.
  • The mounting types for the front derailleur depend on the current claris derailleur - if you are using two rings at the front you need the 4700 for three rings you need the 4703. Band-on means there is a clamp which wraps around the tube to secure the derailleur and is most likely the one you have, the other number relates to the diameter of the tube, you'll most likely need a 31.8mm clamp. Braze-on derailleurs tend to be used on carbon frames.
  • The shifter is the most important/expensive part of the groupset, you need the 2x10 left and right shifters, it's often easier to buy them as a pair.
You'll also likely need to replace the gear and brake cables, and if doing that you may as well replace the outers at the same time. Also worth checking are the brake pads. For brake outers you'll be best served getting compressionless brake outers, which will improve brake feel significantly. Also if updating the whole groupset consider replacing at least the front brake caliper - the ones you have are serviceable but there are much better options out there, the TRP Spyre is pretty much the best for cable disc braking.

you definitely need the GS (long/medium cage) rear der with an 11-34 cassette.
you don't need to change Front Der, but can if you wish, not much difference between claris and tiagra in functionality and the 4700 LH shifter will work fine with a claris FD. (which is band on looking at the link to the Kona)

if you get tiagra 4700 shifters you must get a Tiagra 4700 rear derailleur (or one of the 11 spd group set ones) as 4700 Tiagra 10spd pulls a difference ratio to say old 105 10sp or Tiagra 4600 10spd.
you don't really need a full groupset, unless its cheaper as no need to replace crankset, what you have is compatible with 10 speed 9but it migt be economical to buy it that way and sell what you dont need.

its not mentioned but you obv need a new 10spd chain.

Why not just get a rear hanger and Claris rear mech (i'm not touting for a sale - but i have a brand new Claris 2400 long cage available if you are struggling to get one) and wait until supplies pick back up and there is more choice go for upgrades which will be way better than tiagra 4700 with its compatibility issues? You'll get a hanger here: https://gearmechhanger.com/

Hello and :welcome: to CC.

Its not only your LBS that is having trouble sourcing parts, you’ll run into the same problems with Shimano stuff due to production problems at their factories and increased demand for parts. You could of course go secondhand but beware prices there have increased.

Check out freehub width if going to a 10/11 speed cassette.

Scout around for an after market hanger there are some places that specialise in them.

Good luck.

Also worth keeping an eye on the second hand market now 12 speed Shimano stuff is available, might be a slew of well priced 10/11sp stuff there in the coming months.

Thanks! Yes, I saw these specific packages from Wiggle; however, I did not find any other packages in other sites for Tiagra.

The downside of the package you shared was that they include also parts that I do not want, such as v-breaks. I am also not sure what the "175mm 50-34 11-32" differences in numbers are and whether these will or will not fit the bike. The front derailleur is also using braze-on and I think I have band-on so that may not fit. When I was looking for these package deals I was trying to see if any include also hydraulic breaks as that would be nice but did not find any.

To be honest, I think this is worth considering. It would be the quickest and easiest way to get your bike back on the road and then you could relax and plan your upgrade at your leisure.

I'm not normally a fan of replying to posts that say "how do I do X?" with "No, do Y instead". But in this case I think it's what I'd probably do.

btw when you source a new hanger - get a spare. You probably won't be able to find it when you need it, but for a short period you can feel virtuous about having planned ahead. ;)

Hello,
Thank you for amazing responses and warm welcome to the forum. This really helped to consider different angles to this and I did not expect this many responses.

After mulling it over, I think that in terms of getting the bike back on road I don't need to move from Claris to Tiagra. I'll take the suggestions of others to wait until something better becomes available and parts become little more accessible.

Taking that into consideration I decided on a new list of components I'd go for:
  • Kona Hanger AA (2x as one would be spare  ) - That's a must, got this one after Kona confirmed the type for around 15£.
  • RD-R2000-GS/Medium - Found one for around 25£, long one does not seem to exist. Not entirely sure which is on the bike but my guess is that it is the medium one. The only reference number I found on the broken derailler was RD R2000 SE.
  • Callipers [optional] - There was suggestion that I could upgrade the front calliper. I looked around but did not find TRP Spyre. I found the following callipers available but I am not sure whether these actually make meaningful upgrade. I had older bike with SLX and they were nice but these were hydraulic brakes while the one below is disc. I would not mind upgrading them completely from Hayes L-Series but have no clue how much of an upgrade it actually is and whether it isn't better to wait for something better.
    • 2x Shimano SLX M7120 4 (72£)
    • 2x Shimano Deore BR-M6120 (53£)
    • 2x Shimano Deore XT BR-M8120 (90£)
  • 2x Riddler Folding Tyre 700x37C (43£) - Tyres were one upgrade I though would actually make a good difference given the places I can ride in here. I feel 650B are not particularly helpful on the combination of road and light gravel in here. They seem to be tubeless.
If you have any advice on any of the above I would be very grateful again.

Thanks you for your help!

That rear mech is the right one - same as the one I offered you
Re brakes - I think you meant you have cable actuated brakes not hydraulic?
You cant use cable levers with any of the Shimano calipers listed as they are all hydraulic ones. If you currently have Hayes hydraulic brakes and want to keep them you cannot use them with any Shimano hydraulic caliper - Hayes use DOT fluid and this is incompatible with Shimano which use mineral fluid - cross matching would destroy the seals. Fluid is not interchangeable.
If you are fitting a full hydraulic system then the Shimano SLX are decent brakes and the XTs better. Both better than the Deore - which are still ok.

if you have no braking issues stick with the Hayes CX (cable disc brakes - post mount for reference) as they get a reasonable reviews. TPR Spyres are arguably the rolls royce of cable disc brakes.

2x Riddler Folding Tyre 700x37C (43£)
- this alarms me - your bike has size 650 wheels so you need 650 tyres. you can vary the from the 47mm width but not the wheel diameter. WTB are decent tyres, so unless you think you need a knobblier tread pattern then 'd stick with what you have until you wear them out

Thank you @T4tomo and @iluvmybike.

My list is getting smaller and smaller I think.
  • Kona Hanger AA - Ordered
  • RD-R2000-GS/Medium @iluvmybike - Can you please DM me about the RD you have? Probably easier if I can get it from you rather than a shop, at least more ecological for sure.
  • Callipers - You are both right, and the Kona also corrected me about the callipers and said that my bike has IS tabs and the brakes are mechanical calipers paired with dual control levers. Seems that as I cannot get the TRP Spyre, I'll better wait. The breaks are fine.
  • Riddler Folding Tyre 700x37C [optional] - I went with this based on the Kona model with 700 diameter. The nuances between that and my Kona look really small. Anyway, I asked Kona directly about this because I would like 700 on my bike as well but I'll double-check that this is not a silly thing to do. I only see differences in Standover and BB Height, all the rest, including rims (WTB SX19) looks identical. However, I acknowledge that that even slight difference in geometry can actually mean a lot? On the other hand, they may not really list all these things on the website and I am expecting a bit too much detail.
I guess it is just Hanger and RD for now then.
