If you think you might stay longer than the 90 days allowed by the visa waiver program, I would advise you to apply for a proper visa.

Otherwise... (from here)

Staying beyond the period of time authorized, by the Department of Homeland Security, and out-of-status in the U.S., is a violation of U.S. immigration laws, and may cause you to be ineligible for a visa in the future for return travel to the U.S. If you overstay the end date of your authorized stay, as provided by the CBP officer at a port-of-entry, or United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), your visa will generally be automatically be voided or cancelled, as explained above. Dear Sir/Madam,

You can apply for a B2 visa (Rather than the Visa Waiver, which cannot be extended past 90 days) which allows you to stay for up to 6 months.
You will require a return ticket to enter the USA, so you should buy a flight ticket that allows you to change the return date if necessary.

You should apply for the visa as soon as possible as you will need to book an interview at the Embassy and depending on your local Embassy, this make take a month or two or more.

Quite honestly is it worth the hastle to get into the USA? They don't want you, unless you are on a package tour, so why bother? There is still plenty of world to explore.

A few years ago before the ESTA stuff they didn't rip the visa tear offs out of our passports. Took us years (literally) to get it sorted and to prove we had left the country. Had to send off school records, credit card records, the works and this was from outside the country. Honestly, it'd be better to apply properly or not bother at all.
