They have zero sense of humour with people who over-stay, so definitely get a visa for the time you need and a bit more.

A work colleague of Mr Summerdays made a mistake of turning up with a Visa out of date for a business meeting and was promptly put on a plane back to the UK. Worse still for him, he seems to be unable to get a visa to visit the country now and so was unable to accompany his American wife when she had to go to the USA for her father's funeral.

I would say definitely do it the proper way!

US customs will give you no leeway at all..none. Think 1960's Russia. Do not be familiar when answering questions, only answer the question directly (yes or no) if they consider you a threat then you are a threat. I had it on authority that the onus is on you to prove that your visit is NOT a threat. PaRaNoia.

To be fair, this attitude is pretty common to Immigration staff across the world. Personally I've found US Immigration staff to be extremely polite, I've just resisted the temptation to be smart with them (like when they ask "When was the last time you visited the USA?" answering "Last month" and not adding "as you can see on that screen in front of you" ...).

Filling in the ESTA is enough of a pain for a family. Each one line by line. They really don't want folk coming in.

surely that is part of the test to check you are who you say you are.

It is (though it seems a little obsolete given that they've just verified my biometric passport and scanned my fingerprints). I was simply observing that smart remarks are probably not a way to win friends and influence people at Immigration desks. :-)

I was going through immigration at Orlando 3 years ago with my family and it was all very grim and serious. The guy behind the desk then asked me the purpose of my visit. I replied "err... Tourism? " He replied in a loud voice "TERRORISM" ?

My jaw dropped, everyone went quiet, heart rate went through the roof and all eyes were on me. My eyes were on his gun! He then laughed and waved me through.....not funny .

I would carry one of these just in case:

I've had a couple of these instances. I think you just have to accept the "bomb humour" runs one-way when passing thru immigration.

Bloody hell Yanks...you really dont want us over there do you!

Just been speaking with the US embassy in london...at £1.23 a minute....booked a meeting there at $160 cost non refundable if visa rejected....only slot 24th may....then they keep my passport for 5 days and direct me to a courier (at my cost) to have it returned withing 10 working days....so that means a june start date is looking decidedly dodgy....oh and they insist on a 2"x2" picture as well...(wtf are inches these days anyway??) ...and uk passport pic booths pics are too small it seems...so it has to be done at a pro photographer...more cost...and all of that is after afull day online completing their application form!

I'm starting to think that if I cant start the ride in June I'll hit bad weather in the rockies and that I do not want.

Anyway...not being one to give up, i'm off to grosvenor square!

I was roughly planning a (hopefully) future cross northern US then down Pacific coast trip over about four or five months. It seems easier to do a chunk of it in Canada and keep the US bit under three months.
