They have zero sense of humour with people who over-stay, so definitely get a visa for the time you need and a bit more.
To be fair, this attitude is pretty common to Immigration staff across the world. Personally I've found US Immigration staff to be extremely polite, I've just resisted the temptation to be smart with them (like when they ask "When was the last time you visited the USA?" answering "Last month" and not adding "as you can see on that screen in front of you" ...).

My jaw dropped, everyone went quiet, heart rate went through the roof and all eyes were on me. My eyes were on his gun! He then laughed and waved me through.....not funny.
