I'm looking at buying a bike and it has just occured to me that i should maybe get something before the 4th and the VAT increase!

Or are the prices set to cover that??

Lots of testing to do next week if not!!

Lots of places will be absorbing the rise according to the financial program on Radio Four.

If places don't absorb the rise then £25 per £1000 is hardly a meteoric price rise unless your a Yorkshireman.

Don't forget you have the post Christmas sales to look forward to.

Top of the list for bike stuff of course should be a helmet.

Also WRT the VAT increase, many energy companies have been billing in December instead of January. That means that they have estimated or read the meters in November and all the December usage will fall in the VAT increased billing for the next quarter.

I have been billed on an estimated reading for my gas already and I will be phoning through (or submitting online) a meter reading before the 4th January and requesting an updated bill with pre VAT increased pricing.

If you are buying a bike I would think post Christmas, pre VAT increase sales would be the best time to look.

I think, and I could be wrong, that if you are going to use borrowed finance then it will be calculated on the pre VAT increase amount regardless of when you pay it back. Also I think that applies to any transaction completed before the 4th even if delivery is some time later.

Except this was not the point I was making orginally. A helmet should be the first thing you buy afte a bike, whether or not it is VAT exempt makes no difference. Even if you did have to pay VAT, it would only work out as an extra £1 based on buying a helmet for £40.

For the more expensive bikes, the first purchase made after the bike should be pedals.

Let's see... if the average monthly energy bill is £150, you would save all of £3.25. Are you sure you aren't from Yorkshire as well?

Actually it is even more of a waste of time. Sorry to spoil your conspiracy theory, but Vat on domestic gas and electricity is 5% (not 17.5%) and it is staying at 5%. http://www.direct.go...t2010/DG_188500

True, having said that you should be able to haggle a decent set of pedals with the bike.

Then I'd buy mudguards

I was going to buy a Roubaix so bought it in December 09 before VAT went up from 15 to 17.5%. The day I picked it up was the first frosty day of the winter which was followed by 3 months of snow and ice. By the time I could ride it the retail price had not changed but the LBS was offering free Specialized accessories up to 10% of the cost of the bike. Beating the increase cost me £170.

I thought about whether I would save much by buying a bike before the VAT increase. On bikes I am looking at, the increase would mean I would spend about an extra £10. Not much really.

I may still buy one before the new year though.
