It was a lovely day, so I did one of my planned trips. I hopped on a train to Banbury and then wove around exploring, then rode home. 40 miles all in and I think about 16 new tiles which should expand the size of my square Northwards…

This took me from 20x20 to 23x23

I sneaked out to the West to grab three tiles this morning. No trains this time, just a 40 mile ride.
The main goal was the one immediately to the left of my square's Western Edge, but the other two made the route into a nice loop.
Although the wind made it harder than it was meant to be. North wind felt it was opposing me most of the time. I think it had more W in it than expected.

Okay folks,

This is of course just for fun...

But what are your personal rules for VV Square collecting?

My rule is that if I am working on my contiguous "home square" that rides to collect squares must be from home, driving/using the train out is frowned upon!

That said, im more than happy to collect squares when on holiday or staying away!

I am conflicted now because my square is expanding to meet squares i have collected while riding a route that I drive to.

Like i said, personal rules - don't have to make sense and don't really matter to anyone.

Any ride that is specifically to collect tiles I don't use the car/train/whatever. If I happen to collect tiles or even deliberately go out of my way to collect tiles when on another ride such as an audax then I may drive to/from the start or use the train/plane/whatever. There is some overlap but I don't worry about it as it is only a game.

My personal rules are "anything goes". Everyone will be different, but I take my pleasure in planning the routes and exploring new places.
Riding 50 miles to start "the ride" is not what gets me going at all. That doesn't mean I would never do it though.

I reserve the right to do whatever the hell I like because it's my game and my rules.

As your square gets bigger around 40+ it's becomes hard to gather squares without completed 100 mile plus rides so driving or catching a train to the start becomes attractive . My square is now at 50 and I've certainly driven to start points ,everyone decides what feels right to you

Some of the squares I've got are only accessible by gravel bike or on foot. You wouldn't want to ride them on £50 tyres and carbon wheels.
If on foot, does that mean I have to walk there? You can tie yourself up in knots, or you can just enjoy the game.

At the end of the day one sets one's own rules. Great respect to anyone who has stricter rules than me, but my game is against myself.
The most fun is devising ways to get squares that only a few people have got. Sometimes you have to be sneaky or cheeky or just plain lucky.

This one from yesterday I was only the 17th person to get it. It was on the gravelly side of "OK" for my nice wheels and tyres though.

This one from last year was much more difficult and required proper gravel biking through undergrowth and full stealth skills

My nearest square is now over 40 miles away, I'm definitely in the area of anything goes. My view is if I move under my own propulsion through a square I grab it, regardless of how I got there.

I feel sorry for the people who live near (<20 miles or so) from places like Porton Down where there's just no way you can get them.
It looks as if, in sunny Oxfordshire there are enough tiles around me to exhaust my interest.

This is what I love about this sort of thing, its so personal, pretty pointless, and great fun!

How do you get this tile info up?

In the top menu there is an item "Explorer". Global Heatmap
Screenshot 2025-05-06 at 07.18.50.png

If you click that it takes you here

Then if you click your cluster icon it zooms to your largest cluster
Screenshot 2025-05-06 at 07.20.09.png

Then you can unselect that (if you want) but it stays zoomed in to the right area.

Then if you click any square you get the details...

Can't stop tiling, even when on holiday!

New York City, mostly done during the Five Boro Bike Tour (their closed road equivalent to Ride London) but also including a test ride that I did a few days before, mainly round Central Park. You might notice one line I haven't highlighted in yellow and that's where my GPS decided to plot its own course that bore no resemblance to where I was actually riding for some reason, but luckily it didn't visit any tiles I hadn't already crossed off by other methods.

Hilton Head Island in South Carolina, a resort area that is supposedly the most cycle-friendly in the US, but that's more to do with the hundreds of miles of cycle paths available; I'd say if you were riding on the roads, the attitude of drivers is much more what you'd normally expect - not terrible, but nothing to write home about either.
