I do have a provisional route and looking at it on a map, I will admit there are a few bits where I'm tempted to grab an extra tile if it's less than 50 yards off my route (especially if it only involves a left turn).

I generally didn't even look, since I had other things to consider. The ride has since actually become the backbone of my cluster spur to Sheffield north of Stratford-upon-Avon, but even if you ride without considering tiles, generally it's much easier to tick off a region two tiles wide than three.

However, in the Leeds region I had preexisting tiles, and it was fairly easy to thread my ride through the unticked gaps.

Avoiding spurs was probably my biggest concern there, I never like doing spurs, let alone on a tour.

Finally increased by 19x19 max square yesterday, when I filled two annoying gaps down near Crawley. I was on my way back home having given up on a FRidays ride, and looking at the map now, am annoyed I didn't take the opportunity to bag more tiles. Ah well, nausea and dizziness aren't good when trying to navigate.

But I've got reasonable foundations to get to 27x27, and I've previously planned to achieve that with only 4 rides plotted and ready for download to my Garmin. Except the areas north of Walton-on-Thames and around Croydon really aren't my cup of tea for cycling, and I'm sure the Warlingham area is very hilly.
Will have to look at those routes again, and probably plan a night ride, or maybe a very early Sunday morning.

An imperial century ride up to my Northern edge which is just shy of Wirksworth saw me grab 14 squares total now 6744 and max cluster up 14 to 3674 . My Northern edge may not extend any further north without drive to the start rides as it gets proper hilly add that to the distance required and it's a BIG day out . Slowly working my way to a 2 square increase to 53*53 hopefully this year

Did a 71 miler yesterday via Atherstone and Market Bosworth which mopped up 9 tiles on my Northern edge. https://www.strava.com/activities/15309964695

Also last week I was on hols in Cotswold Water Park and did 3 x 40+ milers which got me around 90 new tiles, but didn't help my cluster or square. Long term plan to link this mini-cluster up at some point.

My next jaunt up that way will try and complete 2 rows up from my current square. Likely I'll drive to the start otherwise it would probably be a 100 miler.

If you need the tile below be sure to call in at Whitehall Farm, he loves cyclists and will be sure to offer you a beer, tea, coffee etc.

Him "excuse me mate this isn't a cycle-path"
Me "it's a footpath though"
Him " don't do it again"
Me " yeah right"
Him " blah blah"

I had an old farmer tell me I couldn't ride on a bridleway, I was at the time talking to a dog walker and we just looked at each other and laughed. I politely told him he was wrong and I was going to continue riding on it and I left him there chuntering on his tractor.

“I don’t need to ride it again. I’ve got the square now.” 😂
