Whilst looking in the newsagent today I noticed Victoria is also on the cover of a Wii magazine too.

The photo used for the cover...

Ms Pendleton is the double of my son's primary school teacher.

Ooh..give us the name of the school and I'll hang around the school gates...oh hang on...

Oh well. It's called 'selling out'. She looks great though, hey? And she'll always be an inspiration to me...and to lots of other females who ride bikes (properly!)...

Mr Pig - I hear ya matey but mysogeny is a fact of life. The tedious 'woman as object' crap has been around since time immemorial. I wade through it on a daily basis in the course of my work.

I'd like to be able to credit the majority of blokes I know to see through the fact that this is a cynical attempt to sell mags, lovely though she is, and also credit them with the intelligence and good sense to treat everyone they know - whatever gender or sexual orientation - with respect.

And I can't spell mysogeny.

What is misogyny anyway, and how do you know if you've got it? Wikipedia says it's hatred (or contempt) of women. Even if you do tend to regard women as sex objects, it doesn't mean you hate them, or necessarily hold them in contempt. I don't even understand what the big deal is in being regarded as a sex object. Evolutionary speaking, that's what we all are. It's the only reason we're here. If you're still regarded as a sex object than you're lucky. I can't think of any bloke that would be upset about being regarded as a sex object.

If you happen to be female, being regarded as a sex object - having the complexity and introcacy of your identity reduced to biological function - has formed the basis of the subjugation, oppression, exclusion and economic de-valuation of women for centuries.... which is why we've had to fight for the vote, for equal pay, for the right to an education, for the right to the same economic status as men, for equal access to careers, for a life outside the home - in other words beyond child rearing and domesticity.

To put it crudely, men were always the oppressors of women. Of course they wouldn't mind being viewed as a sex object. It was their fantasy in the first place!

Dunno about that. The Taliban subjugates, oppresses, excludes and devalues women, but also insist they dress up in burkas when they leave the house. I don't suppose they approve of porn, or viewing women as sex objects in the way we usually understand it to mean. From reading Pride and Prejudice, it seemed women in those days had very few economic options. Their economic outlook depended on who they could marry. Sex before marriage was a scandal, so they could hardly be considered sex objects either. A lot of value was placed on virginity, so a lot of oppression by men was to stop their women from being regarded as sex objects. Some of the subjugation, oppression, etc must have been due to women not being strong enough to fight and being tied to the house to look after children. Plus, I'm not sure that just because a lot of people do want to have sex with you, your identity is reduced. Was Marilyn Monroe's?

Depends why she killed herself I guess.

Can't comment on the burqah because I don't know enough about it. The majority of Arabic speaking countries aren't great on women's rights though...

Regarding the 18th and 19th centuries, if your economic outlook, as a female, is restricted to how well you can marry, hasn't that just proved my point. Your primary role is as a wife and mother. So your economic outlook isn't linked to how hard you can work, or how eduated you are, it's connected to your primary biological function, and to your dependence on somebody else...Don't forget there was hideous double standards, regarding which women were 'respectable' and which were 'sex objects' in those days too.

Well, that's all history, so we can forget it and try and redress the balance a bit and stop the "clever girl, stupid bloke" mentality that pervades the Media and Entertainment today.

if i was a bloke i wouldn't shag her. but that's just my opinion. she's not curvy enough for me. not my type at all if i was lesbian, and i don't find her photo shoots attractive. i think she actually looks better in the wii shots as i think the FHM one is too try hard.

however, i don't blame her for doing the shoots. i would. it's nice to be seen as sexy too, not just good at your job. i mean come on, what woman doesn't want to be the sex goddess in stilletos? she's not selling herself out, she's just trying to say "hey, i feel like i look like a dog in my cycle clothes looking all sweaty and knackered. look at how i scrub up though"

i mean come on... what woman thinks she looks good when she's done a session on a bike? i'd die if i had to have photo's of me slapped all over the papers after i'd been out riding. after my first paris ride, i couldn't wait to dress up on the last night and go out with the lads, after 4 days of looking like crap!

Popular conception is that a bloke would shag anything if it was available (and live). Non blokes just don't understand the "thought" processes involved.

:o)

btw she's not quite my type but I love watching her racing round a track and beating the rest of the world.
