Hey all, looks like I'll be visiting Cambridge for a few days next month. So far, I'm only planning to see the viking museum at Montfit...something castle, any other tips on what to see or do thereabouts?

Mountfitchet Castle, is a mock-up Norman site not a Viking one, its also in Essex so don't go there :stop: Plenty to do in Cambridge itself, some very good museums and if the weather is nice you could always try your hand at punting. The Imperial War museum in Duxford is also well worth a visit.

Normans, vikings... hard to keep up with all these angry german peoples.
Thanks for the tips. There is something very British in announcing the scientific discovery of the century in a pub.

My colleagues and I enjoyed the natural history museum - skeletons of all sorts of things! But then we were animal bone specialists....

German, germanic...
Our history is a lot simpler:
Get occupied by a neighbour, repeat.

We're not so different, just substitute 'immigrated into' for 'occupied'....;)

I'm not getting near your car traffic. Last time I was there, everyone was driving on the wrong side. The roundabouts especially were horrible.

Arch, you've got some cool stuff for sale! Sent you an email.

Cool! I have replied....

Yeah, that getting used to driving on the wrong side is interesting isn't it? I've driven in France and found the same thing - I only forgot once, and fortunately the oncoming car wasn't going fast!

Go for lunch at The Wrestlers on Newmarket Road. It looks pretty dire from the outside, but the food (if you like Thai) is heavenly. You'll also rub shoulders with about 85% of the Cambridge software industry in there. When you're not there, also visit Clowns, on Kings street - a lovely little Italian cafe. The best coffee in Cambridge, and the gnocchi pomodoro is perfect. Oh, and spend a couple of pounds to go up the tower of St. Mary's church, which gives you great views across the city. When you're bored with that, travel up the road to Ely and have a look around the cathedral, and drink a nice cup of tea at Poppies, by the river.

Sounds just like our history, its just that Vikings and Normans are not Germanic. Normans were French speakers of Viking decent, who lumbered us with their feudal system after invading Saxon England. The Saxons of cause were of Germanic decent and had pushed the earlier Britains to the Celtic fringes.
