There is an intriguing link be between volcanoes and bicycles, Carton Reed has suggested that a larger volcanic episode in 1815 was instrumental in the invention of the first bicycle Karl von Drais in 1817. So what long term changes to transport will the current volcanic eruptions bring about??

Maybe we'll finally get the anti-grav hover car we were promised for the 21st century.

Perhaps more bicycle use indirectly as British holidaymakers choose to stay here, or take ferry journeys rather than relive the experience of travel chaos.

Who's Carton Reed? Sounds like a company specialising in basketware and materials....

Or do you mean Carlton Reid?

Well maybe - just maybe the industry will fund some materials research so that volcanic ash can't ground the aircraft. All those mega bucks lost and £1m per year for a few years might solve it. Rolls Royce might fund work for hardening engine components whilst Airbus/BAe will fund the airfame hardening work. Or will it all be left up to McDonnell Douglas and Boeing to grab the patents in the USA?

Or will they all sit on their hands and wait for government funded reseach to deliver.

As Shakespeare could spell his own name 11 different way, then as a dyslexic I feel entitled to misspell other peoples names Achr...
