Many, many years ago, I was riding my Motorbike in a stream of traffic, when suddenly a child ran out, from a grass verge into the stream. The stream was very long doing no more than 40mph, as we were behind a heavy lorry a few dozen vehicles in front of me. From 5 cars back from the incident, (So I was sixth.) I saw him get thrown into the air and back to the road as the car that had hit him swerved right in a vain attempt to miss him, the next car braked hard and swerved left, but ran him over with a third car ramming the second from behind as it was braking hard to avoid the poor lad. As he emerged from under the second car, car three's front wheels went over him, with the car stopping before the back wheels reached him. The whole incident lasted less than 4 or 5 seconds, if that, but I sometimes see it some 40 odd years later as clear as day in my occasional dreams of the incident.
I overtook the stopped stream and made for the first telephone box a mile or so up the road, then returned after calling 999.
Miraculously the boy lived, although with what long term disabilities I never found out. As one of the few people who actually saw it, from the advantage of the back of the motorbike looking up the left of the stream, (I was going to take a left some 80yds or so after the point of impact.) I was a key witness for the Police. All three drivers were charged, and found not guilty!
So getting hit, at night by four cars is, sadly, possible!
