So, i decided to walk to work yesterday to avoid a cycling disaster. I walked no problem, and covered 2+ miles in 30 mins so was well chuffed, and not late for work. And I walked home.

However. Today my legs feel totally shagged. My thighs feel like I've done a millions squats and it hurts when I walk up/ down stairs.

Is this normal??

I cycled to work today. With ice tyres and Yaktrax over my spd's. FTW. So much more enjoyable, and awesome.

Do you not do much walking? Or were you walking so gingerly you exercised all those tiny balance muscles that normally never get flexed?

Either way, muscle 'ache' is rarely a major issue. Muscle pain from a pull which I presume you'd have noticed straight away is a different matter. Embrace the pain - it's muscles you don't use much breaking down to rebuild themselves stronger!

(Though in all seriousness if it persists for days and yours worried, see your GP)

I'd like to think that my muscles are more specialised for cycling, but the fact is I don't walk very far or for very long. I guess its been a long time since I have had the pain of using underused muscles.

I find that I tend to push down harder with my toes to get enough grip when it's icy, resulting in the aching thighs as you describe. Nothing to worry about! The roads are usually much better, so I'll usually ride when the pavements are icy.

I don't ride when it's icy. Lesson learned on 16th December, fell off on black ice, ouch! So, no more riding when it's freezing or even close to it. Went for a walk with the better half yesterday, 100mtrs and we turned around, too dodgy under foot, ice patches everywhere.

Take care out there, it's long season, plenty of time yet.

For anyone interested I think it's the Rectus Femoris muscle on both legs that I've done a mischief to...
